Good-Enough Gary Gets an Upgrade

Why one farmer finally said goodbye to his trusty AG-372 and how it changed his operation.

Gary’s the kind of farmer who knows his land and trusts his tools. His boots are worn, his coffee mug has a chip, and his Magnum 340? It’s been running an AG-372 receiver since 2016.

“It still works,” Gary says. “I’m still tracking satellites. I’m still holding lines. What’s the problem?”

That’s what he told his CNH dealer when he called about a service issue. His receiver had dropped signal near a tree line again and he figured a quick software update would do the trick.

Gary’s dealer sadly informed him that his receiver was obsolete, meaning no new firmware updates were available. Gary’s dealer didn’t launch into a lecture. He just asked him to take a look at his iPhone.

“You upgraded that, right? Why?”

Gary shrugged. “Better performance. New features. Compatibility. I guess the old one just couldn’t keep up.”

“Exactly,” the dealer said. “Your receiver’s the same story.”

That’s when Gary started listening.

The dealer asked him to check the underside of the receiver. That’s when he noticed something he hadn’t before: a Trimble sticker. He’d always assumed the receiver was a Case IH product—it even had the Case IH branding on the side. Turns out, it was actually a Trimble product that came as a factory-fit solution for Case IH and New Holland machines.

That small detail changed the path forward. Instead of continuing through CNH, Gary would need to work with a PTx Trimble dealer for future upgrades. While that meant working with a new partner, it opened the door to a broader range of support—not just for his receiver, but for all his precision ag technology. It was a smart step forward for keeping his operation up-to-date and running smoothly.

Launched in 2012, the AG-372 helped farmers around the world plant, spray, and harvest millions of acres. It supported GPS and GLONASS, worked with WAAS, OmniSTAR, and RTK, and brought submeter accuracy to the masses. Now that it’s obsolete, PTx Trimble no longer provides replacement parts, software updates or bug fixes. It’s like trying to stream Netflix on a flip phone. Sure, it powers on—but it’s not built for today’s demands.

Turning Over a New Leaf

After talking with his local PTx Trimble dealer, Gary learned that the AG-392 was not only a simple install but had features to help him overcome daily challenges like loss of line sight and dropped signals with:

  • Higher accuracy and more uptime » faster convergence

  • Ability to track more satellite constellations » overcome signal loss

  • RTX corrections support » stay on-line

  • Seamless display compatibility » no re-learning required

No more dropped signals near tree lines or outbuildings. No more wondering if WAAS lines will shift from one week to the next. He was sold.

And the upgrade? Just one cable and a quick software update performed by his PTx Trimble dealer. Gary didn’t have to lift a finger. His Pro700 display stayed right where it was, saving him time, money and the frustration of learning a new system.

More Uptime, Less Guesswork

With the AG-392, Gary’s seeing RTK-level accuracy without a base station or modem. He opted for CenterPoint RTX, Trimble’s satellite-based correction service, which delivers sub-inch accuracy.

Gary’s working with fewer interruptions, less fuel waste, and no crop damage from skips or overlaps.

“I didn’t think I needed it,” Gary admits. “But now I’m wondering how I put up with the old one for so long.”

Ready to Upgrade?

You don’t have to be a Good-Enough Gary to benefit from the AG-392. Whether you’re running an AG-372, another older receiver, or just looking to future-proof your operation, talk to your local dealer [link to dealer locator page] to learn about promotions and upgrade opportunities tailored to your farm, your tractor and your operation.

Because sometimes, good enough… just isn’t.
