We sat down with Dinen Subramaniam, a strategic marketing specialist covering PTx Trimble OutRun to answer the top questions farmers had at Farm Progress Show about the new OutRun | Grain Cart solution. Here's what you need to know:
What is OutRun | Grain Cart?
OutRun | Grain Cart is a retrofit kit that transforms your tractor and grain cart into an autonomous system. It streamlines harvest operations, reduces labor demands and minimizes downtime, keeping harvest moving efficiently during peak season.
What operations can the system perform?
The grain cart can be staged, summoned to the combine to unload on the go, and sent to a truck loading zone— all without a second driver. This automation allows the farmer to deploy their labor resources to other important tasks, helping them utilize their machines, employees and resources in the most efficient way possible to ensure that each operation is completed in as timely a manner as possible.
How does it work?
The grain cart is controlled through an iPad in the combine that can be used to call for a pickup while on the go. Both front or rear approaches are possible to fit the needs of the farm. The sensors on the combine and tractor allow the operatorless grain cart to align with precision under the unloading auger while the grain tank is emptied. Once the unload is complete, the operator can then send the grain cart to a staging point around the field to be ready for the next pickup.
OutRun also minimizes compaction by re-using previous traffic patterns when possible. Operators can control cart speed and designate slow zones as needed.
What are the system parameters?
The OutRun | Grain Cart currently supports corn, soybeans, wheat and most small grains, with more crops to come. The system operates at speeds of up to 15 mph and supports fields with inclines up to 15 degrees, with manual mode possible in very hilly terrain. One tractor and grain cart kit is compatible with one combine in the current machine configuration, while multiple configurations are planned for the future.
While the grain cart can collect grain and drive to a designated area, an operator is still needed to unload the cart into a truck. The system uses Starlink connectivity and PTx Trimble location technology, while the combine’s guidance and steering system remains unchanged.
OutRun reports on engine codes and fuel status via the iPad. Switching between manual and autonomous modes is also quick and easy with a push of a button.
What components are required?
On the Combine:
Inside » iPad
Outside » OutRun Combine kit mounted to the roof of the combine
On the Tractor:
Inside » small Outrun Console (for engaging autonomous ready mode)
Outside » sensors (on top of the cab and front of tractor), OutRun Intelligence housing and antennas on top of the cab, buttons on each side of the tractor for arming and emergency shutoff.
On the Grain Cart:
No hardware or technology required!
What safety mechanisms are built into the system?
The system was built with safety as a top priority. Sensors on the tractor constantly monitor its surroundings. If an object is detected, the system slows, stops if the object doesn’t clear and will alert the combine operator if absolutely necessary. For moving obstacles, the system waits until the path is clear. The tractor and grain cart stay within field boundaries set by the operator, and sensors ensure safe proximity to the combine to prevent collisions.
Will this replace people?
While it can replace a tractor operator, the goal is to free up labor for other critical tasks like feeding livestock, driving semis, or managing grain dryers. OutRun handles the fieldwork so your team can focus where they’re needed most.
What’s the cost? Is there a subscription?
The pricing structure for the OutRun | Grain Cart includes a one-time hardware investment with an annual service fee – meaning no per-acre or hourly charges. Starlink connectivity is included in the base price.
What’s the compatibility of the system?
OutRun | Grain Cart is currently compatible with John Deere 8R tractors (Model Year 2014+) with IVT.
What if I don’t have a compatible tractor?
New compatibilities are in development. Fendt 900 kits are expected in Q3 2026, with additional compatibilities on the way. As an aftermarket-first solution, OutRun is designed for tractors already in your shed and development will continue with that as a top priority.
Where can I buy OutRun | Grain Cart?
OutRun | Grain Cart kits are now available for purchase through a Full Line PTx Trimble dealer. Check out our dealer locator to find a dealer near you!
How do I get support for the OutRun | Grain Cart?
Product and technical support are provided by your local PTx Trimble Dealer where the purchase was made. Dealers can also initiate remote support calls to get you back up and running in a timely manner.
What’s coming next?
Coming in Q3 2026, OutRun | Tillage will transform your tractor and implement into an autonomous tillage system. After creating a field outline manually, you can engage the system and walk away. With Starlink connectivity, you’ll overcome rural connectivity challenges and keep your operation moving while taking care of other tasks. The solution will include path plan options to optimize for factors like fuel and time savings and provide safety protocols and mobile alerts for remote monitoring and management, anywhere on the globe. The OutRun | Tillage kit will be compatible with John Deere 8R tractors (2014+) with IVT and Fendt 900s.
